I am a final year International Relations student at the University of Exeter, and like many prospective graduates I didn’t hold any tangible experience in the industry that I yearned to head into. Astley Media particularly stood out from the crowd in that it has a phenomenal track record at the CIPR Pride Awards, and has been repeatedly recognised as one of the leading PR and marketing agencies in the South West. The diversity of AM’s past projects demonstrated the exciting and dynamic nature of their work and I was keen to gain some experience with them.

Coincidentally, there was no better time to have started my placement given that the team were in the final run up to the upcoming Fast Track to Growth welcome event at the Deer Park Hotel. I was thrilled to be able to attend the day, and see how the prior hard work enabled its smooth execution. Aside from event management, I was tasked with doing sell-ins, press releases, and primary research as well as producing a marketing content calendar.

The last few weeks have shone light on the lesser-known aspects of PR that are otherwise unknown without hands-on experience at an agency like AM. The placement has reaffirmed my desire to pursue a career in the sector, whilst also giving me the grounding and confidence to apply to programmes that I would have otherwise thought out of my reach. Given the nature of my degree, I am inclined to head into Public Affairs, but remain open minded as to where possible opportunities may arise in the PR industry.

It’s been a pleasure to have spent the past few weeks at AM. The team’s enthusiasm and camaraderie made the office a conducive environment to work in, and I would like to express my whole-hearted appreciation to everyone at Astley Media for their time and effort during my placement.
